Remember them? My childhood memory is biting through chocolate to have an awful, dripping surprise of a whole brandied cherry. It is not a positive memory. This year I had one-well, it isn't precisely a cordial-made by John and Kira's, a small Philadelphia company I have followed for years. Their cordials are really pretty, but that shape gave me flashbacks. They have employed two tricks to bring me around. First, they use dried cherries, so you get Port aromas instead of that red-Sharpie smell. And the syrup is gone, replaced by dark chocolate ganache. The flavor is deeper and less sweet, and will satisfy those shy of cordials as well as people who already like them. ($29 for nine; www.johnandkiras.com)

These are by far the best chocolate covered cherries I've ever tasted. I absolutely loved the cherry inside. They're beautiful too.
